When roulette gambling was first brought to the United States, the greedy casino owners took advantage of the game’s popularity by creating a 5.26% house advantage. Some casino owners decided to make this advantage even higher by creating a roulette wheel with 31 numbers. This wheel had a staggering 12.9% house edge. Because of the growing discontent with gamblers, two French brothers Francois and Louis Blanc made the single 0 roulette game in 1842. This resulted in a lowering of the house edge to 2.7% and the roulette gambling’s success.
Even though there were many variations of roulette games in the 18th century, the first modern roulette wheel made its appearance in 1796 in Paris. The wheel had most of the elements that we associate with today’s roulette gambling. When Europeans visited New Orleans in the early 1800s, they brought the game with them and introduced it into the casinos there. The Americans made their own version of the roulette wheel with double zero. As roulette gambling gained popularity in the United States, more Europeans came to play, especially the French since the game was banned there.
Even though the origins of roulette gambling are disputed, the game as we know it definitely began in France. In 1720, the first gaming table using a rotating wheel and spinning ball was used for gambling. Then, it was called roly poly. Soon after its introduction, roly poly was banned in England under the gaming acts law of 1739. However, these laws were ignored by Beau Nash, the Master of Ceremonies at Bath, and he made a very similar game to modern roulette which he called Even Odd. This game was also banned soon after in 1745.
Roulette gambling started in France in the 18th century by a scientist named Blaise Pascal. Supposedly, roulette resulted during an attempt to make a perpetual motion machine. The name roulette actually means “a small wheel.” However, there are rumors that the gambling game actually goes much further back in history and started in China. Then, it was brought over to Europe through friendships between Chinese and Dominican monks. Other rumors suggest that roulette was actually first played by the Romans who would use their chariot wheels to make gambling games. Because roulette is so popular, you will find many rumors associated with it.
